Thirty-four new Swiss Guards were sworn in Thursday in an elaborate ceremony in Vatican City in which the guards promised to protect the pope, even “sacrificing if necessary also my own life.”

Thirty-four new recruits joined the ranks of the Swiss Guard, taking an oath of loyalty to Pope Francis and his successors. The ceremony is traditionally held on May 6, in memory of the 147 soldiers who gave their lives defending Pope Clement VII during the Sack of Rome in 1527.

The contribution comes in the light of the 100th anniversary of the resumption of diplomatic relations between Switzerland and the Vatican, and offers the perfect opportunity to learn more about the renovation project as well as about life in this multilingual corps that is also the world's smallest army.
