What’s it all about?
The Foundation for the Renovation of the Barracks of the Papal Swiss Guard in the Vatican was established in Solothurn in autumn 2016. Its sole objective is the renewal of the barracks buildings and the other infrastructure facilities of the Guard. The Foundation reports to the supervisory authorities of the Swiss Confederation and the Canton of Solothurn. With its public and charitable purpose, its status as a tax-exempt foundation is recognized. Once its objective has been achieved (or in the event of termination of the project), the Foundation for the Renovation of the Guards Barracks will be dissolved and its capital will be transferred to the Foundation of the Papal Swiss Guard.
Renovation of the guards barracks
The guards barracks renovation project includes the three existing barracks buildings. At present, two buildings are used as troop accommodation for unmarried guardsmen and for the canteen. The administrative offices and the officers with families living in the quarter are accommodated in the third barracks building. The buildings were built in the 19th century. Since then, hardly any renovations have been carried out, with the inadequate insulation and the poor building fabric causing disproportionately high maintenance costs as a result.
